Introduction for How to Learn to Subtract:
An arithmetic operation in math is classified as addition operation, subtraction operation, multiplication operation, and division operation. The subtraction is said to be removing a part from the whole. The difference between two numbers or quantities is determined. The act of taking one number away from another is known as subtraction. For example, subtracting 5 – 3 is 2. Let us see about how to learn to subtract in this article. Is this topic Fraction Subtraction hard for you? Watch out for my coming posts.
Rules and Examples for How to Learn to Subtract
Rules for Subtraction:
Subtracting the positive and negative number rules.
1. Positive number can be subtracted by positive number is equal to positive.
2. Negative number can be subtracted by positive number is equal to negative.
3. Positive number can be subtracted by negative number is equal to positive plus negative is equal to positive.
4. Negative – negative = negative plus positive = Use the sign of the larger number and then subtract. (Here, we have to change the double negatives into positive).
Examples for How to Learn to Subtract
1. 6 – 2 = 4
2. (- 3) –1 = - 3 – 1 = - (3 + 1) = - 4
3. 5 – (- 3) = 5 + 3 = 8
4. (- 7) – (-4) = - 7 + 4 = - 3
5. (- 6) – (- 8) = - 6 + 8 = 2
Worked Examples for How to Learn to Subtract
Example 1: Subtract 28 – (-12)
Solution:
Write the numbers one under the other and then do the subtraction by starting with the one's place and go for subtracting tens place.
Let us write the given example as 28 – (- 12) = 28 + 12
Here, both the numbers are addend.
28 (addend)
+ 12 (addend)
------------
40 (add the carry to the top of the tens place)
------------
Therefore, the solution for subtracting 28 - (- 12) = 40
Example 2: Subtract 96 - 21
Solution:
Here, the number 96 is minuend and the number 21 is subtrahend and then the result is difference of subtracting two numbers.
96 (minuend)
- 21 (subtrahend)
------------
75
-------------
Therefore, the solution for subtracting 96 – 21 is 75.
Example 3: Subtract 84 – 48.
Solution:
Here, the number 84 is minuend and the number 48 is subtrahend and then the result is difference.
Subtract 48 from the larger number 84. In this case we cannot subtract 8 from 4. So, we borrow one from the tens place, we get,
84 (minuend)
48 (subtrahend)
---------
36 (difference)
----------
Therefore, the solution for subtracting 84 – 48 is 36.
